This guy is pushing the boundaries of experimental free jazz. He is weaving a cerebral musical tapestry of non-linear sonic expansions.

Babe In The Hoods

January 3, 2009

Babe Ruth was an obscure, British rock band from the 1970s who unintentionally earned a permanent place in hip-hop history with the release of their strange, mariachi-inflected, funk-rock song, “The Mexican”.

Unbeknownst to the band at the time, the song’s dancefloor-moving “breakbeat” was embraced in the States by pioneer DJs including Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and many other purveyors of the then-fledgling, hip-hop movement.

The wonderfully weird song tells a strange tale of the Wild West with haunting, tortured lyrics provided by Babe Ruth’s singer, Jenny “Janita” Haan.

In the 1980s, the song enjoyed brief rise to popularity when producer and former Madonna paramour “Jellybean” Benitez covered the song and made an electro-dance version of the overlooked treasure.

Still, the original, Babe Ruth version is amazing.

Listen.
